Merchant of Venice is now available on DVD.

Quotes from William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice:

Bassanio: Gratiano speaks an infinite deal of nothing, more than any man in all Venice.

Bassanio: Promise me life, and I'll confess the truth.
Portia: Well then, confess, and live.
Bassanio: 'Confess' and 'love' had been the very sum of my confession.

Intel from IMDb ...

Tirant lo Blanc is currently "filming".

Plot Outline: Tirante the knight is as committed to fighting the Turks in Constantinople as he is to relieving Carmesina, the heiress to the Byzantine Empire, of her virginity.

No news on the name of Charlie's character yet.

This appears to be a coproduction between Spain and Great Britain, that will be filmed in English during 12 weeks on location in Madrid, Almeria Istambul, and whose opening is predicted for October of 2005.

Good luck to Charlie!

Many thanks to Nadine for letting us know that there will be a showing of The Merchant of Venice at the Toronto Film Festival next week.

The screening will be at 2:30 pm on Sunday September 9th in the Visa Screening Room.

Sony recently bought the North American distribution rights for "Merch" and here is an article from ComingSoon.net about the purchase.

Sony Classics Acquires The Merchant of Venice
Source: Sony Pictures Classics Thursday, August 19, 2004

Sony Pictures Classics today announced the acquisition of rights in North America and Germany for Michael Radford's The Merchant of Venice, starring Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes, Lynn Collins (and Charlie Cox of course). The film, which will debut at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals, will open at year's end.

Adapted and directed for the screen by Academy Award Nominee Michael Radford (Il Postino), The Merchant of Venice tells Shakespeare's classic tale of morality, revenge, redemption and love. This modern approach to a timeless tale highlights Academy-Award winners Al Pacino as Shylock and Jeremy Irons as Antonio, Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love) as Bassanio and newcomer Lynn Collins as the most clever Portia.

"We are excited to continue our relationship with Sony Pictures Classics," says Gary Hamilton, managing director, Arclight Films and executive producer of the film. "We're confident this controversial, brilliant film will be high on everyone's list come awards season."

In a joint statement, Sony Pictures Classics commented, "At long last this great play has become a fine movie which features some of the finest acting of the year."

The Merchant of Venice is written and directed by Michael Radford, produced by Cary Brokaw (Closer, HBO's Angels in America, The Player), Barry Navidi, Michael Cowan, and Jason Piette, and stars Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes and Lynn Collins.

Sony Pictures Classics Co-President's Michael Barker and Tom Bernard and Dylan Leiner, SVP of Acquisition and Productions, negotiated the deal for Sony Pictures Classics, and Gary Hamilton, Managing Director, for Arclight Films.

Here is a little peek at the director of Charlie's new movie, Casanova. All information about Lasse Hallström was obtained from IMDb.com or Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia.

Lasse Hallström/Birth name Lars Hallström -- Spouse - Lena Olin (1994 - present)

After almost two decades of making various TV and feature films in Sweden, Hallstrom finally attracted worldwide attention (and Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay) for his adaptation of My Life as a Dog (1985), a warmhearted yet poignant look at the antics of a mischievous 12-year-old. His early films, including A Lover and His Lass (1974), Father-To-Be (1979), The Rooster (1981), and Happy We (1983), were never released in the U.S.

After the success of My Life as a Dog Hallstrom's American debut, Once Around (1991), revealed an impressive grasp of character if not a flair for strong narrative.

An American production of Peter Pan-a pet project of Hallstrom's didn't come to pass, 1991's Hook effectively co-opting it.

His most recent films are:

What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), with Johnny Depp
Something to Talk About (1995)
The Cider House Rules (1999) Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Michael Caine
Chocolat (2000) Alfred Molina, Carrie-Anne Moss,Johnny Depp, Juliet Pinot
The Shipping News (2001) Kevin Spacey Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett
and
ABBA: The Definitive Collection (2002)

Upcoming projects include:

Casanova (2005) (announced)
Harry & Caresse (2005) (announced)
Unfinished Life, An (2004) (post-production)

Please visit IMDb for more information about the above movies.

Many thanks to the man himself, Charlie Cox, for sending us word on his upcoming project.

I have been looking for new intel to share, but things seem to be much the same on the Charlie Cox movie front. Merchant of Venice is still in post production, dot the i is still in limited release with no DVD release date yet, and Things To Do Before You're 30 is still waiting for it's Sept. 04 release.

So I decided to post a bit about Charlie himself. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the education they have recieived, so I thought I would send along a bit of information about Charlie's alma mater Sherborne School in Dorset.

Did you know that it was founded in the eighth century? ........ yes, that's right the EIGHTH century .. .. As in eight hundred years before the piligrims ever landed on Plymouth rock! WOW! AND ............. did you know that it is a "single-sex" school that begins admitting boys at age 13? AND AND -- did you know that some of the other famous alumni (besides Charlie) include David Cornwell (John Le Carre) -- Jeremy Irons -- James Purefoy (the black prince in Knights Tale) and none other than Chris Martin (ColdPlay) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is what Sherborne School says in their mission statement on their website:

Sherborne has a tradition and history of which we are justly proud, with roots extending back to the early eighth century. We are, however, in tune with the needs and demands of the modern world and our primary aim is to prepare our pupils for the challenges and opportunities they will face after leaving school. At the centre lie our beliefs in a moral society and in genuine scholarship. We are also open-minded about new ideas and we enthusiastically embrace the best of them.A Sherborne education seeks to develop the whole person, to draw out the individual's talents and interests and to open doors for the future.

Would you like to learn more about this amazing place? Maybe check out some incredibly beautiful pictures?? It looks a little like Hogwarts to me, at least all the wonderful parts of Hogwarts What a fabulous place to go to school!

Ok, here is the link: Sherborne School

Last week we reported that Arclight Films would be showing a ten minute promo for Charlie's upcoming The Merchant of Venice at the Cannes Film Festival.

Well, according to our sources, Charlie's film Things To Do Before You're 30 will also be screened at Cannes this coming week. The news item read that the film is being listed as a "highlighted product looking for a buyer", which I assume means a distributor for the world market. We are still expecting a September 2004 release date as earlier reported.

But at any rate ..... it means our Charlie is all over Cannes this year ....... at least on film!

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

Content Editor LaLaith reviews ...

Dot The i

I had an opportunity to view Dot The i at an Art House film cafe this weekend, so I thought I would offer up my completely unbiased review.

The movie was incredible. I really enjoyed it. There is a point in the movie when the female lead,(Verbeke) explains to the male lead, (Bernal) that in Spain, they say a kiss is the dot on the i of love. And he replies "but there is no i in love," and she says "well, maybe it doesn't work so well in English."

This was my fear as the movie was starting......... all the intrigue and "foreignness" of the film might have been a spoiler for a simple cinema addict like me. I was pleasantly surprised. For every plot twist, there is another turn, for every point you think will be predictable, there is an unexpected new development.

The script was excellent, and the acting amazing. There are 5 main characters, and each one is pivotal to reconstructing the jigsaw puzzle storyline.

Of course I was primarily interested in viewing Charlie Cox for the first time on screen, and I was not disappointed. He literally lit up the screen with his presence. He is a gorgeous man, and his voice is every American woman's fantasy. His character was nothing what I expected it to be. The fact that the ending hit me totally out of the blue, had much to do with Charlie's ability to wrap you in one concept of his character which added to the suspense and surprise.

Dot The i was one of those films you want to own on DVD. You want to go back and check plot twists you missed, dialogue you want to dissect, and characters you want to study. AND of course, faces you want to have an opportunity to view over and over.

I give this movie a *thud* over rating of 4 out of 5

Samuelson Productins has put a fall 2004 release date on the Simon Shore directed film Things To Do Before You're 30 (aka You Don't Have To Say You Love Me).

Alliance Atlantis will be distributing the movie first in the UK. The film stars Dougray Scott, George Innes, Emilia Fox, and of course, our Charlie Cox.

Alliance has provided this little teaser of information:

In 1983 Don Robson (George Innes) started a boys football team called Athletico Greenwich. Twenty years later six of the lads are still playing for the team, but things have got so much more complicated.
